International showjumper, Joe Whitaker (Brother to Ellen Whitaker) made a dream start to his racing career with a last-gasp win at Newcastle on Tuesday.

The 32-year-old, from Penistone, took the Tjade Collier-trained Ladronne to first place in a field of 26 for the pair’s first win under rules, beating Taras Day by a neck after coming up from last place.

Joe, who represented Great Britain in 2016, is the first member of the Whitaker dynasty to become a National Hunt jockey, with sister Ellen and brothers Tom and Donald all showjumpers.

Ellen told the Barnsley Chronicle “Joe can do whatever he puts his mind to. He is very hard working and very determined. We are all supporting him and we are all excited to see how he does. He is a great horseman. Hopefully he will get some good rides and opportunities. And we will do all we can to help. We wish him the best of luck!”
